I found our through my Fit and Well text (Fahey, Insel, 2004) that a normal loss of weight should be done about 1/2- 2 ibs per week. There is no best diet. The only diet that works is eating right and not relying on others to do the work for you. Diets that limit you in anything are not good for your body. The most obvious the no carb diet, this diet will deprive you of no carbs which in turn could cause you to become in a ketosis state where the body has run out of carbs the brains first use for energy. Ketosis happens to diabetic patients, when they go into a Diabetic Coma.
