I just read an article titled Older Americans Not Eating Well. "No surprise there," I thought. But I kept reading and came across this interesting statistic:
"Older Americans are doing a better job than Americans on the whole, where about 73 percent do not eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, the government recommended allotment."
Now I could pontificate about how we need to eat more fruits and vegetables, but I thought I'd just give you an easy, practical way you can include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Here it is.
When you eat out at a restaurant that serves sandwiches (Jason's Deli, Bear Rock Cafe, etc.) look for the "Garden Sandwich"... or the restaurant's equivalent vegetarian option.
I've been doing this for a couple months now and have discovered that the vegetarian sandwiches are often better than the meat sandwiches. The vegetables are grilled and seasoned, so they taste really good.
Some restaurants will let you swap the potato chips for a fruit cup. If it's allowed, make the swap. The fruit usually tastes better anyway.
At Le Peep's and The Egg & I, two of my favorite breakfast places, I ask them to swap the potatoes for tomato. They'll usually substitute three tomato slices for free.
If you start doing this on a regular basis, you'll add a surprising number of fruits and vegetables to your diet that you weren't getting before. Let me know how it works out for you.
