Tunnel vision.
It's easy to acquire when you spend too much time among Internet marketers.
All you see is a small group of high profile people who hire copywriters.
You see the Armand Morins, the Jay Abrahams, the Mike Filsaimes.
But it's like looking at the reflection of water. You are too preoccupied with the dazzle of the light and fail to realize there is a deep ocean underneath.
The fact is, there are thousands of small businesses out there who need the expertise of copywriters.
Yet you will never see it if you stay confined to the microcosm that is Internet marketing.
If ever you feel you are getting discouraged about "too much competition" in copywriting, then I suggest you pull your head out of the computer and start exploring the "real world" where you'll find an abundance of clients who will happily pay for your services.
P.S. Many of my clients are in the Internet marketing community, so this post is just as much for me as it is for you! :-)
Hi Ryan,
You make a big point. I know, personally, because I've only done only ONE project for an IM client. Everything else has been for small and medium-sized businesses. From a small framing shop, to a dentist, to consultants, employment agency, HVAC, chiropractors, and an 8-staff IT corporation.
I even wrote copy for a landlord association :).
Once you get them going with direct-response--while all their competition staggers to keep up with branding--you both can easily start making some nice profits.
You just have to have a good system setup to educate them without taking up your own time.
