There's a right way and a wrong way to go about gaining your independence.
I think "the right way" involves doing more and being more than you are today. Taking on greater responsibility and making wise decisions that will support you now and in the future.
Not everyone shares my view though. Here's an example from a news story in today's issue of The Rocky Mountain News:
A missing Nepalese exchange student who drank only water and slept on rocks in the wilderness for the past two weeks told police Monday she went away because she didn't want to go to work.
I shouldn't have to say this, but I will: you cannot gain independence by running away from your work! Rather, run toward it, embrace it, love it. Then true independence will not be far off.
We should always do something today, that will make us better at what we do tomorrow. If you don't love what you do for others, find somethat that you do love.
